Highlights
New York
The New York Society Library is the oldest library and cultural institution in New York City. Founded in 1754, it has served generations of readers, researchers, and writers. Housed in a historic building, the library combines deep heritage with an active, living collection.
Recently, the library completed a major renovation of its building. The project was transformative. It created more space for books and more room for people, while carefully respecting the historic character of the site.
As part of the renovation, the library faced a critical challenge. Storage capacity needed to increase significantly, but the available space was extremely limited. Off site storage was not an option. Every square metre had to be used as efficiently as possible.
The architects identified the need for a compact, high density shelving system that could fit into a very tight footprint while making use of the full room height. A standard solution would not have been enough.
What the library needed was a system that could unlock space vertically, without affecting accessibility, safety, or day to day use.
To meet these requirements, Delta Designs delivered a fully customised Compactus® Double Decker storage system. This two tier, high density mobile shelving solution allowed the library to use the full height of the space and significantly increase storage capacity.
Both the upper and lower levels move together, ensuring smooth operation and efficient access. By building vertically, the system enabled the library to store more than 30,000 books within the renovated space, meeting and exceeding the required capacity.
The shelving was tailored in height, depth, and length to suit the historic structure. This level of flexibility made it possible to use every available inch of space, while keeping the layout clean and organised. Without this system in place, the renovation would not have worked.
Ease of use was central to the design. Library staff can operate the system independently via a simple touchscreen interface. No additional assistance or mechanical lifting is required.
Safety was also carefully considered. The Compactus® Double Decker is equipped with a SafetyMaster system, using cameras to detect if a person or object is present in the aisle. This ensures safe operation at all times.
Access to the upper level is provided by stairs and a mezzanine. Staff can simply walk up, move through the space comfortably, and work at height with confidence. Improved lighting and clear sightlines make the area feel open and safe.
With the new storage system in place, the New York Society Library no longer needs to consider off site storage or relocation. The collection can continue to grow within the historic building that has housed it for centuries.
Delta Designs played a pivotal role in enabling this outcome. The solution allowed the library to preserve its heritage, remain fully operational, and plan confidently for the future.
The result is a storage space that feels intuitive, safe, and built for the long term, supporting the library’s mission for generations to come.
